Every business should set goals – but what happens next?

 

What do you do once you've set your business goals?

We all can benefit from setting goals – both personally and in our working lives.  Without goals there is always a tendency to drift and under-achieve.  For many companies the first quarter of the year is a time for forecasting for the new financial year starting in April, so it is timely to bring up the subject of goal-setting with your clients now.

Small companies can have a particular challenge on effective goal setting.  The directors are often learning the art of people management for the first time and stretched – wearing too many hats at once.  So, while many of them do the initial goal setting for the next year as part of creating a financial forecast, it is a whole new challenge to make sure each team and employee has targets that align with the company goals and that everyone’s activities throughout the year will add up to achieving the company’s success.  This process, which happens naturally when a company is very small, becomes a much more complex issue as more people come on board.

All of a sudden, as your client grows from about 10 to 20 staff, they have to make an effort to ensure their people are focusing on the same goal.  By about 20 staff a company probably has a hierarchy of reporting and there is a real need to align each function through to the big-picture goal.  For the first time the directors need to think through how to cascade their goals down through the organisation to work out what each person needs to be focusing on.

The way to do this is to set the high-level goals and then to look at each team and work out what their role will be in achieving that goal.  Then break that down into tasks that need to be done and who will do them.  Within Breathe you can assign each employee with their Objectives e.g. for each month or quarter.  Then if these are larger projects they have the ability to split it down further into Deliverables (bite-sized chunks that they can fit into their working day).  So, completing each Deliverable contributes to their Objective, and the Objectives support a company goal.  With this structure, you can be sure the company has the greatest chance of success.

As an HR professional your contribution to this process can be to make the directors aware of the process and recommend the tools to support your clients in implementing it.
