Is a degree necessary to succeed in the business world?
Interesting article running in the Feb 2012 IoD Director magazine (article). As always with this column there i'snt a clear answer and i guess that's the point.
My take on it is that companies following a blind policy of only hiring graduates are potentially missing out on great people. I don't have a degree and I have had a pretty good impact on all the companies I worked for (without wishing to blow my own trumpet). Our policy at breatheHR is to hire for fit and attitude rather than academic qualifications.
Also, its dangerous to assume a graduate comes with specific abilities especially now that everyone seems to go to university. I wouldn't discriminate on anything else so why do so on education.
